How do I change the soundfont for the Roland MIDI synthesizer in Windows 7?

I want MIDIs to sound better in my computer, because the Roland software is very lackluster. I was told that loading a soundfont in the computer would improve MIDI quality. How do I do that? Thanks.

What kind of programs record a keyboard/synth?

I saw videos of people using the mircokorg as like an effects pedal. I was gonna get a pedal but wanted a synth so I thought I could kinda get both with the microkorg. How many sounds could I get if I use a synth like the korg for guitar effects? What is this option called, do many synths have them?

Hello, I am looking into buying a Roland JX-8p, but was wondering. What exactly does the 'Synthesizer Programmer' (memory) do, and is it essential? I tried reading up on it on Wikipedia... but only got more confused... thanks

I've only ever owned a cheap Casio and a MicroKorg, and also a Kaossilator. I'm looking to spend some money on something new. I have a 500 dollar budget, give or take a little, and I'd like it to have a mic and line input and line output, of course, ha...but I honestly don't know what synths/music boards are considered best anymore? Also, what are some good drum machines? I used a Zoom one a couple of times, but I'm wondering what else is out there and what is actually considered GOOD. Ugh, I'm just a bit of a "newb" with the hardware aspects of electronic music. I know my software, but definitely not the actual hardware instruments like synths and such.

Please tell me what the best brands are, the best models, et cetera, etc, etc...even if they cost over 500; I'd like to learn!
